Making your own dog treats is a great way to reward a pet and show them that you love them. By creating a recipe that is unique to your pet and made from healthy ingredients, you can ensure that your dog will not only love his doggy biscuits, but his body will love them too. Making homemade dog biscuits is an easy task and can be accomplished in less than an hour.
Combine 1 cups of flour, 2 teaspoons toasted wheat germ, cup brown sugar, cup sesame seeds, one lemon rind, 12 teaspoons of butter or margarine, one cup vegetable oil, cup ground walnuts and teaspoon vanilla extract into a large bowl and mix thoroughly. Knead the dough until it reaches a thick and consistent texture.2
Separate the doggy biscuit dough into six even parts and roll each part into a cylindrical "log" shape. Wrap these six pieces in wax paper and place in the freezer. The dough will store in the freezer for approximately two months. Bake each section as needed.3
Remove one roll from the freezer and fully thaw. Cut the dough into half-inch squares. You may choose to simply bake the treats as squares, or you can shape them into doggy bones or holiday specific shapes. Preheat the oven to approximately 375 F. Place the dough on a cookie sheet, evenly spaced between each slice.4
Bake the doggy biscuits for about 12 minutes or until they are fully cooked and slightly browned on the outside. Remove from the oven and let the biscuits fully cool before serving to your dog.
